UNDERSTANDING SOCIAL MOBILITY, KPR Institute Engineering and Technology, Autonomous Engineering Institution, Coimbatore, India

On 6th January 2023, a session on social mobility was organized for the OBE student ambassadors of the campus. The program aimed to understand the concept of social mobility and the factors that influence upward and parallel mobility. The session was attended by two students OBE Ambassadors from each department and took place at 3 pm.
The program commenced with an introduction to the concept of social mobility, which was defined as the ability of individuals or groups to move up or down the social and economic ladder within a society. The participants were informed that social mobility is influenced by factors such as education, income, occupation, and wealth, and is an important aspect of social and economic equality. The program also discussed the obstacles that can hinder social mobility, such as income inequality, limited access to education, and discrimination.
The students were then informed that an increase in social mobility is often seen as a sign of a healthy and dynamic society, as it allows individuals to fulfill their potential and improve their standard of living. On the other hand, limited social mobility can lead to a lack of upward economic and social mobility, leading to unequal opportunities and social division.
After the presentation, discussions were facilitated among the participants to encourage them to think about their own perspectives on society and their life plans. The students were encouraged to come up with an action plan for their life to move from one stratum of society to the other. The discussions were productive and the students came up with several ideas for improving their own social mobility and that of others in their communities.
In conclusion, the session on social mobility was informative and engaging for the OBE student ambassadors. The participants learned about the importance of social mobility in a society and the factors that influence it. The program also encouraged the students to think critically about their own life plans and the steps they can take to improve their social mobility. The session was a success and the students left with a better understanding of the concept of social mobility and its implications.
