Summary
The Department of Civil Engineering along with American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student chapter arranged a one-day visit for students of III Year to ICAR - Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation.
The Principal Scientist from ICAR explained students about ICAR and its functions all over the world. The Institute and Research Centers have focused on evolving strategies for controlling land degradation following watershed approach, tackling special problems such as ravines, landslides, mine spoils and torrents, demonstration of technologies for popularization and imparting training besides developing technologies for water harvesting , Saving, and recycling. She explained students about the role of GIS and remote sensing in soil analysis and data collected through the aerial images. In addition, the structures of watershed management are explained in a detailed way. A watershed is an area of land that drains all the streams and rainfall to a common outlet such as the outflow of a reservoir, mouth of a bay, or any point along a stream channel. And explained about the functions of watersheds. The main function of a watershed is to receive the incoming precipitation and then dispose it. Its major functions to collect rainfall water, store water in various amounts and for different periods, release water as runoff, provide conditions and sites for various biochemical reactions to take place, provide habitat for flora and fauna of various kinds.
Totally 50 students and 3 faculty members visited the institute and gained knowledge through this visit. Students actively engaged with the principal scientist and cleared their doubts.
