A two days Science Academies’ Lecture Workshop on Engineering Mathematics was conducted in the Department of Mathematics, KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology (KPRIET), Coimbatore 641 407, Tamilnadu during 04 & 05 January 2023.
On 04 January 2023, the workshop inaugurated with prayer song. The Workshop Coordinator Dr. N. Raja, Assistant Professor (SL.G), Department of Mathematics, KPRIET welcomed the participants. Dr. M. Akila, Principal, KPRIET delivered the presidential address and she emphasized the importance of studying Mathematics to the participants. Dr. K. Karthikeyan, Professor and Head, Department of Mathematics, KPRIET briefly explained about the aim of the workshop. A short introduction to the activities of three Science Academies was given by the Workshop Convener Prof. M. Laxmanan, FNASc., FASc., FNA. He explained about summer research fellowship program and its benefits to the participants. Finally, the Workshop Coordinator thanked the participants.
The first session of the workshop was handled by Prof. G. D. Veerappa Gowda, FNASc., FASc., FNA, Centre for Applicable Mathematics, TIFR. He spoke on “Numerical Methods for hyperbolic conservation laws”. He started with the basics of partial differential equations followed by numerical methods. Then he explained about the numerical methods for hyperbolic PDEs. At the end of the session participants have raised the queries and discussed with the speaker.
The second session of the workshop was handled by Prof. P. Kandaswamy, FNASC., Bharathiar University. He spoke on ‘Mathematical Model for Human Immune System’. He explains how our immunity affects the growth of different virus via both biological and mathematical way and also he demonstrate the mathematical model behind the process. His lecture was thought provoking and praised by all.
The third session of the workshop was taken by Prof. G. D. Veerappa Gowda and he continue his first lecture. He gave an outline of Finite difference, Finite Volume methods to solve partial differential equations and he discussed about advantages and disadvantages of each method.
The last session for day 1 was engaged by Prof. P. Kandaswamy. He pointed out how mathematics plays a crucial role everywhere in nature with some interesting real life applications. The way explaining the concepts and through simple arguments was appreciated by all.
The second day of the workshop started with an inspiring talk on Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations: Bifurcations and Chaos by Prof. M. Laxmanan, Bharathidasan University. Initially he gave a clear introduction of nonlinear dynamics and then he presented an elaborate lecture about bifurcation and chaotic behavior of solutions of nonlinear ODE with examples. Participants asked their doubts and got them cleared.
Second session of Day 2 was engaged by Prof. S. Saravanan, Bharathiar University. His topic was Numerics for Navier-Stokes Equations: Finite Volume Method. Initially he pointed out the need of numerical solutions and he listed out various numerical methods. Then he clearly explained the solution procedure of finite volume method for diffusion equation with some examples. The session was highly interactive.
The third session was handled by Prof. M. Laxmanan. He gave a talk on Nonlinear partial differential equations: Solitons. He started with an introduction of linear dispersive PDEs and its solution by Fourier transform technique. Then he explains about KdV equation and its solitary wave solutions. At the end of his talk there was healthy exchange of ideas between the resource person and the participants.
Prof. S. Saravanan continued his lecture in the last session. He gave a talk on how to solve the convection-diffusion equation by Finite Volume Method. He explained the various schemes for approximating the convective terms. Participants asked their doubts and got them cleared.
At the end, Prof. S. Saravanan, FNASc spoke for few minutes about Science Academies and appreciated the workshop coordinator for well planning of the workshop. He suggested the Department of Mathematics to conduct many other similar workshops and seminars in years to come. Finally, Dr. N. Raja, Workshop coordinator gave a vote of thanks. The two days’ workshop came to an end.
The lectures delivered at the workshop motivated the participants to get involved in mathematical modelling of engineering problems.
