The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology, successfully conducted a hands-on course titled “Exploring Frequency Selective Surfaces using CST Studio Suite and Equivalent Circuit Design” as part of the course U21OEC12 – RF Energy Harvesting Systems for II ECE (IV Semester) students during 12.12.2025 to 13.12.2025 and 18.12.2025 to 19.12.2025 at the VLSI Laboratory.

The program provided comprehensive exposure to electromagnetic simulation workflows using CST Studio Suite, with special emphasis on Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSS) and microwave absorbers. The sessions covered unit cell design fundamentals, periodic boundary condition setup, and interpretation of EM behavior through equivalent circuit (RLC) modeling. Students gained practical understanding of reflection, transmission, and absorption characteristics, along with parameter extraction and performance evaluation.

Industry expertise was added through sessions by Er. Praveen Kumar Palaniyappan, Application Engineer, Advanced Reality Solutions, Chennai, who demonstrated real-time simulation techniques, optimization of geometrical and material parameters, and validation of simulation results.

As an outcome, students developed strong competency in EM simulation, FSS analysis, and equivalent circuit interpretation, bridging theoretical concepts with practical design skills. The course significantly enhanced students’ readiness for RF, microwave, antenna, and research-oriented projects, fulfilling the objectives of outcome-based education and industry relevance.
