The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore, organized a Guest Lecture on “ARM Processors – Exception and Interrupt Handling” on 06 October 2026 (Tuesday) from 10.00 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. at the EEE Board Room. The session was delivered by Ms. P. Maheswari, Assistant Professor-II/EEE, KPRIET.
The lecture was organized to enhance students’ understanding of the exception and interrupt handling mechanisms in ARM processors. The resource person explained the fundamentals of exceptions, different types of interrupts, processor modes, interrupt vectors, and the sequence of operations performed by the ARM processor during an exception or interrupt.
The session also covered the significance of IRQ and FIQ interrupts, exception priorities, context switching, saving and restoring processor states, and returning from exception routines. Relevant examples were discussed to help students understand how interrupts are handled in real-time embedded applications.
The lecture provided students with a clear understanding of how ARM processors respond to internal and external events and how efficient interrupt handling improves the performance and responsiveness of embedded systems. The interactive session enabled students to clarify their doubts and relate the concepts to practical microcontroller and embedded system applications.
At the end of the session, the students were able to understand the exception and interrupt architecture of ARM processors, differentiate various types of exceptions and interrupts, explain the sequence of interrupt handling, and analyze the role of interrupt service routines in embedded systems. The programme strengthened their knowledge of ARM-based system design and real-time embedded applications.
