The session aimed to provide insights into the latest advancements, opportunities, and challenges in carbon capture technologies, a crucial area in combating climate change and promoting sustainability. Dr. J. Krishnamoorthi, Chairman, IEI Coimbatore Local Centre, delivered the welcome and presidential address, emphasizing the importance of carbon capture technologies in achieving India’s sustainable development goals.Dr. S. Balasubramanian, Professor & Head, Department of Chemical Engineering, KPRIET, highlighted the significance of knowledge sharing between industry experts and academic institutions for fostering innovation.Lt. Dr. A.K. Priya, Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, KPRIET & Committee Member, IEI Coimbatore Local Centre, introduced the guest speaker, providing a brief overview of his professional achievements and contributions to the sustainability sector.Er. G. James Solomon, General Manager – Sustainability, Summits Group of Companies, Coimbatore, delivered an engaging lecture on the current and emerging technologies in carbon capture. He discussed various capture methods, their applicability across industries, cost considerations, and integration with renewable energy systems. Case studies and examples from both global and Indian contexts were presented, offering practical insights for engineers and researchers. He outlined three main pillars of carbon capture technology: capturing CO₂ directly from large emission points such as power plants, cement factories, and steel industries using chemical absorption (amine scrubbing), membrane separation, and cryogenic distillation, an emerging method where atmospheric CO₂ is captured using advanced sorbents and filters, with integration into renewable-powered systems, leveraging algae cultivation, biochar production, and afforestation strategies to store atmospheric carbon in natural sinks.Dr. G. Madhan Mohan, Honorary Secretary, IEI Coimbatore Local Centre, expressed gratitude to the speaker, dignitaries, organizing team, and participants for making the event successful.
