The expert talk “Grey to Green – The Ammonia Revolution” was organized to provide final-year Chemical Engineering students with an industry-oriented understanding of the transition from conventional grey ammonia production to low-carbon and green ammonia technologies.
The programme aimed to bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and emerging industrial practices by exposing students to the role of green hydrogen, renewable energy, electrolysis, ammonia synthesis, decarbonization, and sustainable chemical processes. Ammonia is particularly significant because it is a major intermediate for nitrogen fertilizers, while its conventional production is associated with substantial carbon emissions.
The talk highlighted the integration of renewable energy → green hydrogen → nitrogen separation → Haber–Bosch ammonia synthesis, emphasizing the important role of Chemical Engineers in developing energy-efficient reactors, separation systems, process integration, heat recovery, process control, and safety systems.
Enhanced technical awareness: Students gained a clear understanding of the differences between grey, blue and green ammonia production pathways.
Understanding of green hydrogen: Participants understood the importance of renewable hydrogen and water electrolysis in the production of green ammonia.
Industry-oriented learning: The session provided insights into emerging industrial technologies and the ongoing global transition towards sustainable ammonia production
