Why Should I Study Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineering skills are transferable, meaning they will be useful across a variety of industries and help you to become more employable. A degree in mechanical engineering will give you a range of skills including:

  • problem solving – engineering is about finding better, more efficient ways of doing things

Mechanical engineering is a broad field, which has more impact on people’s daily lives than you may realise, from manufacturing the clothes they wear, to building the apps on their phones. You will study a range of interesting subjects during the course of your degree programme. This may include:

  • computer applications – computer technology continues to evolve at an incredible pace, stretching its impact into almost every part of life
  • mathematics and physics – having a good grounding in pure mathematics and physics is vital, as they are the basis of all engineering
  • electricity – study the science behind electricity and how it can further change the world
  • design and manufacture – learn how to draw designs digitally and how manufacturing processes work
  • robotics and artificial intelligence – study the mechanics of robotics and the influence that this relatively new technology is having across a number of industries.

What will I Learn??

Although engineering is a science, it can also require a high level of creativity. As a mechanical engineer, you will learn how not to rely on the way things have been done before, and to think independently so that you can create new solutions to problems. The first wheel, the compass, the aeroplane: all these were engineering solutions which advanced human progress. A degree in engineering gives you the tools to make a difference.

Students build upon their knowledge of science and maths gained in school to learn about materials, solid and fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, control, product design and manufacturing processes. Courses on communication, business and other social-sciences along with the technical subjects are designed to groom students with well-rounded perspectives, as well as the ability and flexibility to work in a variety of settings. Practical learning is integrated into the curriculum.

CENTRE FOR MACHINING AND MATERIALS TESTING (CMMT)

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is recognized as a Research Centre by Anna University, Chennai, for carrying out research work at Masters and Doctorate level.

Many students, at UG, PG and PhD level, use these facilities to do their final year and pre-final year project work.

The following facilities are available at CMMT lab of our department for consultancy projects. A nominal price has been fixed for the utilization of these facilities for carrying out research projects.


Objectives

  • To facilitate quality research for students, academicians and researchers in the areas of Materials and Machining.
  • Hands on training in preparing composite materials.
  • To support research projects by providing assistance in both technical and practical aspects.
  • To create general awareness among students about technical research in the areas of materials and machining.
  • To establish a link between the Institute and Industries and provide technical assistance at large.

Who can Study Mechanical Engineering at KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology

Tamilnadu Candidates

The candidates must have passed the 12th standard(intermediate) or its equivalent examination from the Government recognized board with the subjects as Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with the percentage as 45% (for general candidates), 40% (for backward class including Muslim), 40% (MBC & DNC) and 40% (for SC/ST/SCA) candidates.


Other State Candidates

As the candidates from other states are considered under General Category, a pass with minimum average marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics put together as 45% (General Category)


NRI (Non-Resident Indian Category)

The candidate should have passed in all the subjects and scored a minimum average of 45% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics put together as in General Category


FN (Foreign National Category)

The candidate should have passed in all the subjects and scored a minimum average of 45% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics put together


Eligibility Criteria for Lateral Entry (Direct Second Year) B. E. / B. Tech Programmes

Passed Diploma examination with at least 45% marks (40% marks in case of candidates belonging to reserved category) in ANY branch of Engineering and Technology


A pass in a recognised Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in the relevant field and obtained atleast 50% (45% in the case of candidates belonging to reserved category) in the qualifying degree examination
