Summary

The Department of Civil Engineering, KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology, organized an Expert Talk on “Climate & Environment Responsive Design” on 06 October 2026 at 3:00 PM at the III Civil Lecture Hall, Bhaskara Block.

The session was organized as part of the Unit IV – Climate and Environmental Responsive Design of the Architectural Design syllabus. The programme aimed to enhance students’ understanding of the relationship between climate, environment and architecture and to expose them to practical approaches for developing sustainable and climate-responsive buildings.

The session was delivered by Ar. Syed Abuthahir U, an Architect with extensive professional and academic experience. He holds a B.Arch from Adhiyamaan College of Engineering and an M.Arch from Excel College of Architecture and Planning. He is the Chief Architect at Aplusb Consortium, Coimbatore, where he has been involved in architectural and interior design projects since 2015. He has successfully completed more than 70 projects across residential, retail and commercial sectors.

During the session, the resource person discussed important concepts related to man–environment interaction, factors determining climate, characteristics of different climate types and design approaches suitable for various climatic conditions. The session also highlighted the importance of passive design strategies, energy-efficient architecture, environmental considerations and sustainable building practices.

The practical examples and professional experiences shared by the resource person helped students understand how climatic conditions can influence building orientation, form, openings, materials, shading, ventilation and overall building performance. The interactive nature of the session encouraged students to relate the concepts with real-world buildings and their own design projects.

The programme provided students with an opportunity to connect their classroom learning with professional practice and strengthened their understanding of climate-responsive and environmentally responsible architectural design.
